"Organoponico" in the centre of Matanzas. This area used to surround the train tracks in the past, but became abandoned and covered with litter, creating hazardous conditions for the neighbourhood. When the 1989 crisis started, this and other areas in Cuban cities were cleared and the local population started to grow vegetables. It guaranteed their direct supply of fresh food and it improved the urban environment..Cuba.Photo: Eduardo Martino - between 21.05 and 05.06.2007
